Hurleyville’s transformation over the last decade hasn’t stopped, with the Sullivan County hamlet boasting new shops and amenities every year from the rail trail to the Hurleyville Arts Center and Tuscan-style charcuterie spot La Salumina. The latest trendy new storefront to open to the public is Cat Wilson’s Main Street wine shop Decant Wine & Spirits, which had its soft opening in mid-March.

Wilson, a service industry veteran, is also the powerhouse behind Forage & Gather Market and Willow & Post, both in the nearby reinvented hamlet of Mountaindale. With Decant, Wilson aims to bring a wide and accessible selection of wines and spirits to the public, with a mix of local and international wines, ciders, and spirits. “We have a broad selection for every price point with 50 items under $20, and a ton of low-intervention and organic options,” she says.

The storefront was designed by Samantha Leeds from Creatures of Place, a young designer who recently featured in the 2022 Kingston Design Showhouse. Wilson and Leeds share a long and coincidentally intertwined history from attending the same small Waldorf school in Boulder, Colorado to discovering they were both living in the Hudson Valley amid the pandemic.

The design for Decant goes far beyond standard liquor store expectations, offering an elevated aesthetic experience to complement the shopping process. “The only request as far as design was a ‘warm library’ feel,” Wilson says. The whitewashed space is airy and elegant with plastered walls, a curved wooden bar, comfortable rattan armchairs, and daybed seating.

Built-in shelving displays the bottles for sale while tables in the center of the room showcase books. “We worked with Sam and six local artisans who created everything from the countertops to the terracotta lighting,” Wilson says of the shop. “We wanted to create a space that is warm and inviting but also inspires people to hang out and enjoy themselves. Sam created an incredible space both for retail and for small gatherings.”

Speaking of small gatherings, in the future, Wilson plans to host classes and tastings around wine, spirits, and the art of cocktail making. Of the shop, Wilson says, “Our aim is to increase access to fantastic and affordable wine.”
