In the Hudson Valley, April is the month when events season finally springs back into action. On Saturday, April 8 from 1 to 4pm, wine lovers can spend the afternoon in City Winery’s spacious Falls Room overlooking the Wallkill River for its first Wine Release Open House. Attendees will enjoy an exclusive tasting tour of six of the winery’s newest vintages, which haven’t yet been released to the public.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do since I started working with City Winery,” says Head Winemaker Travis Van Caster, who moved to New York from California to help start the program at City Winery Hudson Valley. “Seasonal open houses are a really big part of the wine industry and wine culture.”

“A big part of our ideals at the winery is to take the best grapes from well-known vineyards and really showcase that sense of place,” Van Caster says. To that end, the six unreleased wines highlight grapes from across the US, including a California-sourced reserve Cabernet, a Long Island-sourced Gruner Veltliner, and a reserve Merlot made with grapes from the Finger Lakes. “Typically we source grapes for merlot from the West Coast, but during the 2020 wildfires we had to change plans and it turned out to be a once-in-a-decade vintage in the Finger Lakes,” says Van Caster.

Each of the wines will be paired with a seasonal small bite curated by City Winery’s chef, and bottles of the unreleased wines will be available at a 10 percent discount. Tours of the production winery will be held throughout the event, and Van Caster will be discussing the wines and the process behind making them.
