In the Hudson Valley, many historic homes were built in a time when one family car was all that needed shelter. Today, as households juggle multiple vehicles and the seasons bring everything from scorching sun to torrential rains that add extra wear and tear, the absence of a garage is more than a minor inconvenience. Tarps and pop-up tents offer temporary fixes, but they rarely complement the charm of a lovingly restored farmhouse or cedar shake cabin. That’s where Glenn’s Sheds saw an opportunity: to create a carport that’s as elegant as it is enduring.
“A carport can be more than a utilitarian cover—it can be a beautiful structure,” says founder Glenn Nystrup. “There are so many around that look cheap and without the quality of someone who appreciates their craft. We knew we could design what we were looking for.”
The New Paltz-based company began prototyping its carport in 2023, building on the same design principles and craftsmanship that have made its firewood, mult-use, and trash bin sheds favorites across the region. Known for their graceful rooflines and proportional harmony—guided by the golden ratio and Nystrup’s background in mathematics—Glenn’s Sheds’ structures bring architectural thoughtfulness to backyard buildings. “Each carport is a work of art as well as a work of fine craft,” he says.
The new carports also reflect a deep family connection to the craft, which began in the 70s during Nystrup’s years of community homesteading in the North Country during the back-to-the-land movement. His grandson, Ezra, has been closely involved in both the design and building process, bringing a third generation into the business and continuing a legacy of appreciation for fine carpentry.

As with all of Glenn’s Sheds’ offerings, the carports are grounded in integrity of materials: rough-cut, full-dimension white pine framing sourced locally paired with pressure-treated lumber at the base for resilience against moisture and ground contact. “Working with full-dimension lumber is a joy and has such a solid feel,” says Nystrup. “It’s easy to sense the strength of the actual timber—the beauty and quality of the white pine trees that offer so much.”
From the sturdy joinery to the elegantly pitched roofline to move rain and snow away, each element reflects an intentional approach to craft. The new carports are no different, offering a solution that seamlessly blends with a wooded landscape or a tidy village yard.
Available now in two formats—custom-built by the Glenn’s Sheds team or as detailed architect-approved DIY plans for the handy homebuilder—the new carport design fits seamlessly into the company’s ethos: structures that are as enduring as they are elegant.
With the new carports, Glenn’s Sheds is continuing its mission to build structures that last, serve a purpose, and look good doing it. “We’ve talked about these carports for years. Part for diversification of our products, part for beauty,” Nystrup says. “We believe that if you’re going to do something, you should do it well.”
