Ulster Savings CEO Lisa Cathie addressing the Young Professionals

The Young Professionals Network of Ulster County had a great turnout for their first mixer last Thursday at the Skytop Steakhouse in Kingston. The event was sponsored by FALA Technologies in Kingston, and organized by the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. As I looked around the room, I didn't see one single person that I recognized, except for Ward Todd, the president of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. He told me that the idea behind having this mixer for this age group (25-39 year olds) isn't necessarily to bring in younger chamber members, it is to serve this undeserved community of young professionals (25-39 age group), and encourage them to "plant roots" in the Hudson Valley.

Sometimes when I'm in a situation where I don't know anybody I have to push my shy self to meet new people. Last night I told myself that it will make for a very boring blog post if I don't network. So, luckily soon I met Jesse Hicks from Take A Day Away Kayak rentals in Kingston. (I didn't even know you could rent a kayak in Kingston!) Jesse started the business when he was 18, and now he is 20, and it looks like the business is doing really well. Then I met Phebe Lino-Downey from Romeo Kia in Kingston, Noni Cavaliere and Evan Auerbach from Dragon Search, Richard Barone, the owner of Skytop Steakhouse, and caught up with two righteous ladies from Hudson Valley Horrors Roller Derby.

All in all it was a great mixer, and the nibbles were good too. I'm looking forward to the next one, although I'm a few years past the age of 39! The mixer was free of charge, but you had to register online via the chamber. For more information on this new Ulster County Young Professionals group contact the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce.
