The Brendon Montessori School

The Brendon Montessori School was established in 1982 and is based on the Montessori principles which develop independence, critical thinking, responsibility, respect for oneself, others and the environment.

The Montessori method emphasizes the three-year cycle (beginning at 3 years of age) in which the child learns at his/her own pace in an aesthetically pleasing and stimulating setting.  Our goal is to assist the child in self-development and to become a lifelong learner and problem solver.

The classroom encourages social interaction, cooperative learning, peer teaching and emotional development. Montessori teachers use observational skills to match students' developmental needs to materials and activities.  This allows the teacher to guide students in creating their individual learning plan.  The Montessori parent is an integral part of the child's total development.

We offer the following Montessori Programs:  Toddler (18 mos. - 3 yrs.), Primary (3 - 6 yrs.), Elementary - Lower (6 yrs. through 9 yrs.), Upper (9 yrs. through 12 yrs.)

Extended Hours Available - Primary and Elementary.

The Brendon Montessori School, Inc. admits students of any race, color, and national origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at our school and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color and national origin in administration or our educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs. Crossroads School

Crossroads is different. The converted home is warm and inviting.  Algebra seems forgotten to the teen searching in vain to find the giggling toddler "hiding" in the closet. It's hard to imagine her on CNN, passionately expounding on education. Parents call the change in their children "miraculous!" But do the warm fuzzies translate into academics? Ask the former student who entered UCLA, as a junior, at 16! Or the two 8th graders who passed the Regents that two-thirds of high schoolers in NY State failed. The founder piloted the school's prototype in California, where it drew international acclaim. In addition to CNN, they were praised by Gov. Wilson, lauded by Congress, featured nationally on ABC, and presented speeches at a U.N. conference. Serving preschool-high school, Crossroads offers a rare opportunity to apply spiritual, not religious, principles daily. Their approach is customized to meet individual needs - some thrive on traditional structure, others flourish with minimal guidance; some take advanced courses, others focus on art. They have multiage rooms, phenomenal science and art programs, and weekly trips. Their unorthodox blend of philosophies has borne a bountiful harvest for all, "prep school" to "special needs." With a stunning setting in Brewster, Crossroads is centrally located for the lower Hudson Valley.

Darrow School

Darrow School, an independent, co-ed, boarding and day school in New Lebanon, NY, offers a comprehensive college-preparatory curriculum within an atmosphere that supports the pursuit of intellectual curiosity, individual creativity, and the joy of learning. The School has been recognized as a pioneer in the field of "hands-on learning," and Darrow teachers use real-world topics and a dynamic approach to make the subject matter come alive.

Darrow's small classes, averaging nine students, afford everyone the chance to participate. Head of School Nancy Wolf says, "Because Darrow is a small boarding school, there is an opportunity for strong connections between students and teachers. Teachers get to know students well, and expectations are high. They push students to do their best in classes, athletics, and co-curricular activities."

The beautiful mountainside campus is located on the site of the historic Mt. Lebanon Shaker Village, and Darrow continues to embrace the Shaker legacy of sustainability and stewardship.  An important feature of the academic program is its focus on environmental, social, and economic resources, and students discover the value of finding balance within one's self, the community, and global society.  The National Association of Independent Schools recognized the excellence of this program in February 2005 with a Leading Edge Honoree Award.

The substantive nature and climate of Darrow School offer students a setting where their abilities can prosper, and the School's distinctive educational philosophy is suited to all learning styles. At Darrow, students reach their full potential as motivated, thriving, college-bound learners.

Hudson Valley Sudbury School

At the Hudson Valley Sudbury School we believe children are driven by a basic need to learn and explore.  We trust that children are able to make sound decisions that affect their lives and the lives of other children and adults in their community.  We trust that children, given a choice, will choose the best and most appropriate path for their education.

The freedom students have at HVSS is coupled with their responsibility to themselves and the community. At the weekly School Meeting, students and staff attend to the business of the school.  Students and staff members each have one vote; therefore students get first-hand experience with participatory democracy.  Their decisions affect every aspect of day-to-day life at school.  Students also serve periodically on the Judicial Committee, a body charged with enforcing the rules, policies, and procedures of the school.

These contributions are vital to the functioning of the school, but they pale in comparison to the responsibility each student has to him or herself.  While it may sound exciting and easy to be able to choose how to spend one's day at school, students may eventually find that being at HVSS is unexpectedly challenging.  We offer students the space they need to take responsibility for themselves.  We trust that given enough time and experience each person will find his or her own path.

Karma Triyana Dharmachakra

Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD) in Woodstock, New York, is the North American seat of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1978, the center offers traditional teachings as transmitted by Kagyu Lineage meditation masters since the tenth century. The term Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in Sanskrit translates loosely as "the place under the spiritual guidance and protection of the Gyalwa Karmapa (Karma) where all three levels (Triyana) of the Buddha's teachings (Dharma) are preserved and taught (chakra)."  Residential teachers at KTD include Bardor Tulku Rinpoche, an incarnate lama (tulku), who is currently teaching from the text of the Bodhicharyavatara. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, abbot at KTD, is a Superior Dharma Master (choje lama), and is currently teaching from the text of the Five Aspirations. Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin is a trained scholar (acharya) recently arrived at KTD who teaches Buddhist philosophy.  KTD regularly hosts illustrious Kagyu teachers from around the world who teach Buddhist classes and meditation.  Numerous meditation centers for western students in Europe and the  Americas are directly affiliated with Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, including more than two dozen centers in the United States.  For information regarding centers and schedules, go to www.kagyu.org.

Maria's Garden Montessori School

Reggio Emilia inspired Montessori in a country schoolhouse surrounded by gardens, woodlands and streams. In our Early Childhood (3-6) classroom, children direct their own activities, creating an atmosphere of peace and productivity.  Practical skills, art, building, language, mathematics, and nature studies are included in this rich learning environment.  As interests emerge among small groups, children and teachers explore them in depth through discussion, experimentation and the creative process. Each child's development is documented in their artistic work, photographs of their activities, and recordings of their conversations.  At the Elementary level (6-9), learning moves from the immediate to the universal. With the rich Montessori elementary curriculum as a starting point, children learn to pursue their own interests through research and small group projects.  Mixed age groups encourage mentorship and cooperation, and small group size allows teachers to work with each child's learning style, helping them to master academic skills.  Time is given for elementary students to develop creatively, physically, and in their relationship with nature.

Mountain Laurel Waldorf School

The pace of change is accelerating as never before in history. Waldorf Education seeks to prepare a generation that will be comfortable with change and will have the tools and the willingness to confront, and solve, the many challenges of our global society.

Unlike past generations, children today can expect to have several careers during their lives, and they can expect to be life long learners, because many of the jobs they will have do not yet exist.

At Mountain Laurel Waldorf School teachers present a curriculum of academic studies, music, foreign languages, art, and movement that is designed to integrate feelings and sensory experience with imagination and thinking. The goal is to prepare children to enter a high school of their choice with a strong academic foundation, an understanding of themselves, and an enduring passion for learning.

The impulse behind Waldorf Education is cultural renewal–an impulse for the future that founder Rudolf Steiner felt could be fostered through a new understanding of the individual and community. In a world of accelerating change and increasing uncertainty, these values will help inspire and sustain children, as they become young adults.

Our N/K to 8th grade Waldorf School is located downtown in the Village of New Paltz, NY within walking distance of the Rail Trail, SUNY New Paltz, historic Huguenot Street and Hasbrouck Park.

Rudolph Steiner School

Developing imagination. Taking responsibility. Seeking truth. These values, promoted throughout our curriculum and our school by devoted teachers, characterize the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School. Set on 18 beautiful acres in the cultural wealth of the Berkshires, we enroll children from pre-K through eighth grade. With the Waldorf High School on Main Street, we now offer Steiner's education to more than 200 children through 12th grade. One of 2,000 Waldorf Schools worldwide, we have served families from Berkshire County, northwestern Connecticut, and Columbia and Dutchess Counties for 35 years.

At the heart of our teaching are two understandings. The first is that children develop as they mature. The second is that teaching is as much an art as it is a science. A teacher's intuition is as valuable as her knowledge. In a whole person, heart and will must be as engaged as the mind. Our rigorous classical education fully integrates academic subjects, fine and practical arts, and physical education in many forms—sports, community service, outdoor education, and dance.

Our graduates continue at excellent colleges and universities and distinguish themselves in many careers. Their education becomes part of them, transformed into skills they can use to shape a meaningful world.

Simon's Rock College

Simon's Rock College is the only four-year college of the liberal arts and sciences specifically designed to provide bright, highly motivated students with the opportunity to begin college in a residential environment after the tenth or eleventh grade. We believe students deserve an educational challenge that lives up to their abilities—and have made providing it our primary goal.

We are absolute in our commitment to providing a first-rate liberal arts education. Our curriculum combines tradition and innovation: core requirements ensure that all students develop the knowledge and skills that every educated person should have, while a wide variety of electives encourages students to delve more deeply into established interests and to explore new ones.

Simon's Rock  students  find  themselves  living  and  learning  among  true intellectual peers, and faculty members who take them—and their ideas—seriously.  They do this in an environment specifically designed for 16-  and 17-year olds, rather than in a college culture created for older students.Young people mature at different rates, and Simon's Rock is not for everyone. For the right students, however, it can mean the difference between marking time and filling the next year or two with challenge, enthusiasm, and growth.
