New Jersey band Speed the Plough began in 1984 as an underground rock all-star outfit, and is heralding its 30-year anniversary with the release of The Stars and the Plough, a two-disc retrospective on the Bar None label. In support of the album, the group will perform at Upstate venue Quinn’s on November 8.
Speed the Plough was formed by John and Toni Baumgartner and Marc Francia after their days as in the Trypes, which, at various points, included all the members of the legendary Feelies. After their first four albums, which feature an ever-shifting cast of players, the group went on an extended hiatus but reformed in 2009 at the urging of Francia’s sons Dan (bass) and Ian (drums) and John and Toni’s son Michael (guitar). All three offspring joined the band and were major players on 2010’s Swerve and The Summer Sessions and 2011’s Shine and Tag Sale (all Bar None). (Guitarist Ed Seifert joined the band for the latter two releases.)
