Country folk singer-songwriter Iris DeMent is a master of subtle wordplay, melody, and observation. Her heartbroken 1992 debut, Infamous Angel, with the painfully poignant signature tune โ€œOur Town,โ€ set forth her at once innocent and world-weary style. After a few years away from our region, DeMent is returning on May 13 to share the bill with Loudon Wainwright III at Tarrytown Music Hall.

DeMentโ€™s newest album, 2015โ€™s sparse Trackless Words, features 18 poems by Russian poet Anna Ahkmatova adapted to music.

Here, DeMent performs โ€œThe Night I Learned How Not to Prayโ€ live last year:

Iris Dement and Loudon Wainwright III will perform at Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, New York, on May 13 at 8pm. Tickets are $35, $40, and $45. For more information, call (914) 631-3390 or visit http://tarrytownmusichall.org/.
