A Poem: Attorneys

it was dark inside
the classroom

because she was showing
a film to the tired students.

a few had fallen asleep
on the floor
in front of the screen.

they were splayed out;
the summer heat will
wear one out
more quickly than you’d think.

she asked:
“does anyone know
what an attorney is?”

one of the children replied:
“someone that gets
you out of jail?”

she laughed.
“yes. sometimes.”
