The legendary rock 'n' roll drummer will perform on August 15.
Rock royalty will hit the region on August 15, when original Allman Brothers Band drummer Jaimoe brings his all-star band to the Colony.
Also known as Jai Johnny Johansen, Jaimoe was born Johanny Johanson in Mississippi and worked with soul greats Otis Redding and Sam and Dave before meeting guitarist Duane Allman through the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Duane and his younger brother, keyboardist and singer Gregg Allman, music veterans as well, recruited Jaimoe along with his fellow drummer Butch Trucks, bassist Berry Oakley, and second guitarist Dickey Betts to form the Allman Brothers Band in 1969. With a boldly improvisational blend of rock, blues, jazz, and R&B, the group signed to Capricorn Records and released their eponymous debut that year and Idlewild South the following year. But their big breakthrough came with 1971’s live At Fillmore East, and epic double album that would eventually establish their reputation as the father of all jam bands.
Jaimoe and Friends, the percussionist’s current band, includes keyboardist Bruce Katz, saxophonist Kris Jensen, guitarist and vocalist Joel Harrison, and bassist and vocalist Joe Fonda. The quintet will perform a combination of Allman Brothers Band classics and the jazz music that inspired Jaimoe when he began playing.
