There are summer destinations built around a single attraction, and then there are places where the season unfolds as a collection of small pleasures. Putnam County belongs firmly in the latter category. Just north of New York City, this corner of the Hudson Valley offers enough variety to fill a weekend—or several—without ever feeling hurried.

The landscape does much of the work. At more than 14,000 acres, Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park remains one of the region’s great outdoor escapes. Trails wind through forests and around lakes, while Canopus Lake draws swimmers, paddlers, anglers, and picnickers throughout the warm months. On a summer afternoon, the appeal is less about checking activities off a list than finding a place to settle in and stay awhile.

Water plays a starring role elsewhere in the county as well. Lake Mahopac has long been a summertime gathering place, and renting a pontoon boat offers a different perspective on one of the Hudson Valley’s most beloved lakes. Out on the water, the shoreline drifts by at an easy pace, creating the kind of afternoon that seems to stretch beyond the clock.

Alpacas graze in the pastures at Tilly Foster Farm in Brewster, where visitors can meet farm animals, attend summer concerts, and enjoy one of Putnam County’s most popular family-friendly destinations.

For visitors who prefer their recreation paired with a stroll through town, Cold Spring remains one of the region’s most rewarding destinations. The village’s compact Main Street is lined with independent shops, restaurants, and cafés, all set against dramatic Hudson River views. A kayak excursion with Hudson River Expeditions offers a chance to experience the river directly, while nearby Boscobel‘s Saturday farmers’ market combines local food, crafts, and scenery in equal measure.

Summer also brings a full calendar of community events. The Putnam County Fair & 4-H Showcase returns in July with the sort of old-fashioned county fair atmosphere that never seems to go out of style. Farm animals, live music, demonstrations, food vendors, classic cars, and family-friendly competitions share the grounds with local organizations and agricultural exhibits. The fair remains one of those rare events that appeals equally to children discovering it for the first time and adults returning out of tradition.

A crowd gathers on the lawn at the Putnam County Golf Course for the Friday Night Summer BBQ Series, where live music, barbecue, and long summer evenings have become a seasonal tradition.

Music takes center stage throughout the season as well. The Summer Concert Series at Tilly Foster Farm transforms evenings into outdoor celebrations, while the Putnam County Golf Course BBQ Series combines live music with relaxed dining and long summer sunsets. Later in August, the Putnam County Wine & Music Fest brings together regional wineries, food vendors, artisans, and live performers for a day that showcases the county’s growing food-and-drink culture.

The arts have their place in the season, too. At the Putnam Arts Council, “Our County, Our History, Our Nation” examines local landscapes and national identity through the work of Hudson Valley artists, connecting contemporary creative practice to the stories and places that have shaped the region.

Boaters make their way across Lake Mahopac, a longtime summertime destination where paddling, cruising, fishing, and lakeside relaxation capture the easy pace of a Putnam County summer.

Taken together, these experiences reveal what makes Putnam County distinctive. It’s a place where outdoor adventure, local culture, and small-town character coexist comfortably. Easy to reach by car or train, it offers the rare opportunity to slow down without having to travel very far at all.
