Beacon’s brainiest bash is back. Nerd Nite Hudson Valley returns to the Howland Cultural Center on February 21, and if previous editions are any indication, it’ll be an evening where PowerPoint meets party, and knowledge gets rowdy. Think TED Talks, but with a stronger commitment to deep-cut esoterica and a lower tolerance for pretension. The only thing more electric than the speakers’ enthusiasm is the collective buzz of a crowd geeking out together.

So, what’s on the intellectual menu this month? First up: Howler monkey testicles. Dr. Ramesh Laungani will be unpacking the evolutionary trade-off between vocal dominance and, well, size down below. Turns out, in the primate world, you can either roar like a beast or carry the family jewels—but not both. File this under “party facts you didn’t know you needed.”

Next, historian Julie Kling takes us on a journey through the surprisingly complex history of breastfeeding. From ancient wet nurses to the rise (and fall) of formula marketing, this talk digs into the societal, economic, and scientific forces that have shaped infant feeding across cultures and centuries. In short: something your great-great-grandmother, your pediatrician, and a medieval monk could all argue about.

Rounding out the evening is Yvonne Caruthers, who promises to connect the dots between Pythagoras and the Pink Panther. If that sentence made you pause, you’re not alone. Caruthers will be weaving a tale that links ancient Greek philosophy, jazz, and a certain cartoon feline. Expect a cerebral high-wire act that could make even the most math-averse attendee suddenly care about triangles.

For the uninitiated, Nerd Nite is a global movement with a simple premise: smart people talking about interesting things in front of an audience that enjoys both learning and libations. Founded in Boston in the early 2000s, the event quickly spread to bars and venues worldwide, proving that the best way to make an obscure subject interesting is to let an obsessive enthusiast go full throttle in front of a live crowd.

The Howland Cultural Center, a 19th-century architectural gem, sets the stage for this fusion of academia and entertainment. The Gothic Revival-style former library is no stranger to grand ideas, making it a fitting backdrop for an evening where deep dives into niche topics are met with rapturous applause.

Whether you come for the science, the history, the unexpected connections, or just to hear someone say “howler monkey testicles” into a microphone, Nerd Nite delivers. And if you leave with a few new fun facts to drop at your next social gathering, all the better.

Doors open at 7pm, the nerdiness kicks off at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15.
