As one of Andy Warhol’s iconic
superstars—and the pop art king’s right-hand associate at his legendary Factory
hive in New York—poet and photographer Gerard Malanga was directly involved in what
was arguably the 20th century’s most influential cultural revolution. “Moments
in Time:: Pictures 1965-2023,” an exhibit now showing at Beattie-Powers Place,
celebrates Malanga’s work behind the camera.
Born in the Bronx in 1943
and now living in Hudson, Malanga worked as Warhol’s chief assistant at the
Factory from 1963 to 1970, during which time he filmed more than 500 of Warhol’s
famous “Screen Tests” and cofounded Interview magazine. His photography
career started in 1969 with a commission to shoot poet Charles Olson for The
Paris Review. He is also the author of over a dozen books of poetry, the
most recent being 2021’s The New Melancholia & Other Poems. “Moments
in Time” includes more than 60 of his photographs of some of the most
well-known artists, musicians, literary figures, and cultural icons of the last
six decades.
Gerard Malanga’s “Moments
in Time:: Pictures 1965-2023” is on view at Beattie-Powers Place in Catskill
through December 10.
