The Jazz at Atlas series keeps fighting the good fight, presenting live performances by some of the foremost figures in contemporary creative music. On July 21, the organization brings cornetist and composer Ted Daniel and his International Brass and Membrane Corps to the series’ home, Atlas Studios, in honor of the band’s debut album, Zulu’s Ball: Ted Daniel Plays the Music of King Oliver.
Daniel made his own debut on disc as a sideman to his late Ossining neighbor, guitarist Sonny Sharrock, on 1969’s seminal Black Woman. A leading figure in New York’s 1970s loft jazz scene, Daniel went on to record and perform with such other major artists as Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Bang, Henry Threadgill, and Defunkt, as well as leading his own groups. Zulu’s Ball brings a contemporary reading to the early New Orleans jazz of Joseph “King” Oliver and features leader Daniel on cornet, Marvin Sewell on guitar, Joseph Daley on tuba, and Newman Taylor Baker on drums
