Adding to this weekโs serious rock action in Hudson (see my Tuesday post about tonightโs performance by Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Basilica Hudson), is another cool show that comes to the Sporty Dog this Sunday: the triple bill of Minibeast, Insect Factory, and Alexander Turnquist.
Minibeast is a new trio led by Peter Prescott, the drummer and singer of influential postpunks Mission of Burma and Volcano Suns. With Minibeast, as he did in the short-lived 1990s unit Kustomized, Prescott has stepped out from the kit to front the band as a guitarist and keyboardist. The resulting sound is, as Burma and Suns fans would expect, reliably rocking and highly innovative; the bandโs website describes it as a combination of โsurf, psych, punk, easy listening, โ60s childrenโs music, and soundtrack influences.โ Insect Factory is the experimental ambient/drone project of Maryland guitarist Jeff Barksy (heโs been releasing LPs and cassettes under the IF name since 2007), while Alexander Turnquist is Hudsonโs resident Minimalism-influenced acoustic guitar genius.
Hereโs a track from Minibeastโs 2016 sophomore album, Free Will:
Minibeast, Insect Factory, and Alexander Turnquist will perform at the Spotty Dog Books & Ale in Hudson, New York, on August 12 at 7pm. Call for ticket price: (518) 671-6706. http://www.thespottydog.com/.
