Woodstock’s Stanton Warren sits very firmly in the lineage of rock ’n’ roll mind explorers from Pink Floyd’s visionary founder Syd Barrett to the Bevis Frond’s Nick Saloman. As with those artists, Warren benefits from having a skilled, sympathetic band surrounding him to carry out his vision. Chamber of Dreams is the collective’s sixth album and their first since the pandemic-era Arabian Nights. Atmospherically, the record is bathed in a mind-expanding wooziness and blanketed with echo and reverb. The title track has a gentle, but insistent force; an inescapable drone. Warren’s lyrics touch on the tradeoffs of making music in the marketplace, while holding on to an artist’s pure chamber of dreams.

“The Dejected” begins with crunchy, almost-glam-rock guitar before downshifting to more meditative psychedelic riffs. A thoughtful instrumental, it’s a wide-screen epic that’s colored with some near-Baroque guitar arpeggios. “Not a Cloud in the Sky” is a distortion-tinged rocker that vibes very much like prime Jesus and Mary Chain, only with greater propulsion. Warren handles all vocals and guitars; drummer Max Parker holds a solid and wonderfully wobbly beat; and Ash Umhey, who plays bass, recorded the sessions. A special note goes to artist James Marsh, whose brilliant cover is reminiscent of the iconic Krautrock masterpiece Tago Mago by Can. Sail on, Venture Lift.
