North Carolina indie icons Superchunk have been kicking out their brand of high-energy, melodic guitar-centric rock since 1989. In support of their newly released 12th studio album, Wild Loneliness, the quartet will hit the stage of Colony on April 15.
Superchunk took the scene by storm with their blistering second 7โ, โSlack Motherfucker,โ released on singer-guitarist Mac McCaughanโs Merge Records imprint, which has since grown to become one of indie rockโs most essential labels. The groupโs sound as evolved as well over the decades, adding interludes of softness and orchestral elements to their core hard power pop base. In addition to McCaughan, the bandโs current live lineup includes long-time second drummer John Wurster, second guitarist Jim Wilbur, and bassist Jason Narducy (founding bassist Laura Balance ceased touring with the group in 2013 after developing hyperacusis).
The acoustic guitar-dominated Wild Loneliness follows 2018โs raucous, politically charged What a Time to Be Alive. โSo many bands settle into a rut as they mature,โ wrote AV Clubโs Alex McLevy in his review of the new disc. โBut what has always kept Superchunk so invigorating through the years is how the music and lyrics have continued to evolve in ways befitting an indie-rock group whose sound has served as the template for a million imitatorsโ
Superchunk will perform at Colony in Woodstock on April 15 at 8pm. Torres will open. Tickets are $25-$30.
