Among the many groups whose rights are currently under attack by the present administration are American transgender adolescents. To help raise awareness of this injustice, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood will host a free screening of the documentary Heightened Scrutiny at the Arts Center of the Capital Region on January 22.
The film follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio, the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court for transgender adolescents’ access to gender-affirming healthcare, as he confronts the legal system and a media landscape that distorts public perception and threatens the struggle for trans rights. The film serves as an urgent call to action against bigotry and injustice, in light of the court’s decision upholding the ban on life-saving healthcare.
Featuring commentary by journalists like Jelani Cobb, Lydia Polgreen, and Gina Chua, and activists like Laverne Cox, the documentary breaks down anti-trans disinformation, highlighting its harmful and destructive impact in the real world. The film chronicles Strangio as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn United States v. Skrmetti, the Tennessee ruling that implemented that state’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood will present Heightened Scrutiny at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy on January 22 at 6:30pm. Admission is free, but a donation to UHPP is requested.
