As troubled as America currently is, it nevertheless has a big birthday coming up. To celebrate the imminent 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, acclaimed early music band Ruckusand opera singer Davone Tines will be giving a special preview performance of the newly commissioned work “What is Your Hand in This?” at Hudson Hall on November 1.

Composed by New York multi-instrumentalist, educator, and poet Doug Balliett, “What is Your Hand in This?” reflects on, as per its writer, “the fragile American experiment and ask[s], ‘how can we passionately call out the wrongs we see, while living together as a people?’” Ruckus, which includes Balliet on double bass, is also the house band for R.B. Schlather’s acclaimed “Handel” series at Hudson Hall. The group combines the Baroque tradition with the raw energy of American roots music and has been dubbed “the world’s only period instrument rock band” by San Francisco Classical Voice.

Bass-baritone Tines is “changing what it means to be a classical singer,” according to The New Yorker’s Alex Ross and has been called “one of the most powerful voices of our time” by the Los Angeles Times.

The preview performance of “What is Your Hand in This?” will be part of a program of other works that will take place at Hudson Hall in Hudson on November 1 at 7pm. Tickets are $19 and $40.
