Late, great playwright August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle” is a 10-play, decade-by-decade chronicle of the life, culture, and experiences of Black Americans throughout the 20th century. The Netflix production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, featuring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, is a film adaptation of one of the cycle’s most famous plays, adapted for screen with aplomb by director George C. Wolfe.
