Dave Shuford’s amazing acoustic project D. Charles Speer blew my head apart with its trippy rebetica-influenced sounds when I caught the band in Hudson in 2012. The New York multi-instrumentalist is returning to town to play the Half Moon this Friday with another awesome drone-heavy project, Rhyton, so as to filet any minds left unfried by his last visit.

Also heavily referencing Greek, as well as Middle Eastern, folk styles, Rhyton pairs erstwhile No Neck Blues Band member Shuford (guitar, bouzouki, electric saz) with Rob Smith (drums) and Jimmy SeiTang (bass, organ) and just today dropped their album, Kykeon (Thrill Jockey Records). Together, the three explore the far reaches of outer space with some seriously serpentine instrumental improv jams.

Here’s one of ’em, from 2012’s Rhyton (Thrill Jockey):

Rhyton will perform with Pigeons, Garcia Peoples, Mike Wexler, and DJ Lunar Moss. Admission is $6. For information, call (518) 828-1562 or visit http://thehalfmoonhudson.com/.
