In 2005, local artists Christopher Albert and Karlos Carcamo got an idea. Hoping for a way to merge the regionโs businesses, social community, and art scene, they turned Beaconโs Main Street into a mile-long storefront gallery. The event was a success; for the next nine years, Window on Main Street continued to serve as an economic stimulus for the town and to strengthen the relationship between its residents and artists.
WOMSX is the eventโs 10-year celebration and will run from Saturday, August 9 to Saturday, September 13. Visitors can tour the work of 35 artists in 31 of Main Streetโs buildings, including Miss Vickieโs Music, Bank Square Coffeehouse, Quinnโs, and Ellaโs Bellas. To mark the anniversary, WOMS is adding a touch of competition to this yearโs site-specific exhibitions. Each artist has been asked to create one piece inspired by the business whose storefront hosts his or her installation. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite work (but only one!) by texting its yellow keyword to 22333, tweeting the keyword to @poll, or by casting their votes online. Awards will also include a $1,000 Grand Prize juried by the eventโs founders and organizers, as well as a Galleristโs Pick determined by five local gallerists.
WOMSX is a free, public event. An opening party will kick off the month on August 9 from 6pm to 8pm at Bank Square Coffeehouse, and the closing party and awards ceremony will be held August 13 from 6pm to 8pm at Quinnโs.
