Over the past two years, SUNY Ulster has stepped up its commitment to serving adult students through its new AdultEDge program. With a larger selection of evening classes at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, more blended online/in-person classes, and accelerated course offerings, AdultEDge makes it easier for working adults and parents to start or finish a degree.
“We try to match the programs we offer with the careers and jobs that are available in the region,” says Deb Kaufman, marketing director for SUNY Ulster. “AdultEDge is very goal-oriented—just like the students are. It’s all about getting a degree or certificate that students can put right to use, right where they live.”
One of the popular programs is the Direct Support Practice certificate, which qualifies people for a range of entry-level positions whether in a child care center or hospice, rehab facility or crisis center. Other AdultEDge programs include Business & Entrepreneurial Studies, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Web Development.
“A lot of people that are looking to start their own business might be experts at catering or web design or personal coaching, but not know how to hire people, file taxes, or do their own bookkeeping,” Kaufman says. “Even a certificate in entrepreneurship can help them organize their business.”
Information Sessions
SUNY Ulster hosts AdultEDge information sessions for prospective students every two to four weeks to provide more information about the admissions process, financial aid, programs, and the prior learning assessment. There will be an info session on the Criminal Justice & Human Services Programs on Wednesday, October 24 at 4pm; and a general AdultEDge info session on November 6, from 6 to 8pm in the Kingston location.
