This year, St. Patty’s Day falls on a Monday (the 17th), the most glum and buttoned-up day of the week. But nothing will keep the Irish spirit down, with Irish pubs and restaurants across the Hudson Valley using the date as an excuse to celebrate with multiple days of Irish music, dance, and food from March 14-17. We’ve rounded up some local spots that are dishing up a heaping helping of corned beef and cabbage with a side of craic and a frothing pint of Guinness.

Garvan’s | New Paltz

Garvan’s, located in a beautiful c.1759 building set on the New Paltz Golf Course, serves up comforting Irish and American dishes. Their year round lunch menu includes both a corned beef sandwich and a corned beef reuben. Normally shuttered on Mondays, Garvan’s will open this March 17 at 8am to start slinging pints of Guinness and dishing out full Irish breakfasts early. The special St.Patrick’s Day menu has yet to be released but will definitely feature the full Irish with bangers, black pudding, eggs, beans, potatoes, tomato, soda bread, and a pint—and we’re guessing corned beef.

Bia | Rhinebeck

Bia in Rhinebeck, by locally acclaimed chef Ric , is an Irish-inflected bistro in Rhinebeck. The locally sourced menu rotates seasonally, but this winter features a gourmet, modern take on hearty Irish fare like ale and tempura-battered fish and chips, Berkshire pork bangers and mash (with caramelized onion gravy and whiskey-glazed carrots) and a slow braised heritage chicken pot pie. Bia will be going all in on St. Patty’s day celebrations with a special menu serving Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, 3/16 with corned beef boiled dinners (in addition to the bangers and mash, fish and chips, and classic Sunday roast usually on the menu). They’ll also have live Irish music on Friday and Sunday from 5pm to 8pm.

Mahoney’s Irish Pub | Poughkeepsie

The train station-adjacent Poughkeepsie waterhole Mahoney’s is more than just an Irish pub in aesthetic. The regular year-round menu dishes up Irish staples like shepherds pie, bangers and mash, Irish beef stew, beer-battered fish and chips, and, of course, the holy grail: corned beef and cabbage. This weekend for St. Patrick’s day, it’ll be a craic all weekend long with Irish food, music, bagpipes, and step dancers all weekend long. Friday through Sunday, the pub will have live bands kicking off in the afternoon followed by DJs. Monday it’s a party from 10:30am on.

Erin O’Neill’s Pub & Grill | Poughkeepsie

Referred to by locals as simply “O’Neill’s” this Irish pub’s menu scews more toward fried seafood and bar bites on a normal day. But for two days on Sunday, March 16 and Monday, March 3/17, O’Neill’s will be serving a special St. Patrick’s day menu that includes all the hallmark Irish foods from loaded baked potato soup ($7) and cottage pie ($22) to bangers and mash ($20), a corned beef sandwich served on rye with Swiss ($20) or a plated corned beef offering served with white parsley sauce, baby potatoes, carrot-parsnip Mash, and cabbage ($27)

Darby’s | Hyde Park

Hyde Park Irish pub Darby’s serves more classically American pub fare year-yound—wings, pizza, burgers—although there are a few Irish nods on the menu: a corned beef reuben and Irish egg rolls, stuffed with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing, as well as other Emerald Isle favorites like fish and chips and Irish beef stew. But on Monday, March 17, Darby’s will go whole hog with their St. Patty’s day celebration, replete with green beer, a special menu of Irish food, drink specials from 11am on, with live music by Probable Cause at 6pm.

Traghaven | Tivoli

Irish-owned Traghaven in Tivoli prides itself on its extensive selection of whiskys. Grass-fed cottage pie and lamb curry hold down the year-round Irish influences on the menu. But for St. Patrick’s Day, Traghaven will celebrate with three days of special food and live music. Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15 offer a fish and chiips special with a band on Friday and karaoke Saturday. On Monday, St. Patty’s Day itself, the pub opens at 2pm and serves dinner through 9pm with corned beef dinners, cottage pie, and more, plus a live Irish music session at 6pm.

The Shamrock House | East Durham

Greene County was beloved by Irish newcomers because its lush green hills felt a bit like home.In the 1930s and ’40s, many Irish immigrants purchased properties that by midcentury became the 50 or so inns, resorts, bungalow colonies, and hotels of a region dubbed the “Irish Alps.” The Shamrock House inn and Restaurant maintains this tradition of Irish-American hospitality with a year-round menu that features corned beef sandwiches, bangers and mash, Chicken pot pie, Shepherds pie, Irish chicken curry. Not to mention the traditional Irish music sessions every Sunday at 1pm. This weekend, ahead, the Shamrock will be serving corned beef and cabbage all weekend. The town’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will kick off on Sunday, March 16 at 1pm with Irish music, including bagpipes and drums, dancing, and food.
