Lois DiDonna, owner of Allure in Rhinebeck, an Aveda Concept Salon, studies portrait painting on the side. “I’m studying with someone rather famous right now and working on some oils,” she says. “My father painted portraits, so it came naturally. There are a lot of common elements—to do haircolor really well, you need an artist’s grasp of the color wheel. They didn’t used to teach that in beauty school 40 years ago; they do now. It’s the foundation for everything.”

“And giving a good cut is a lot like sculpture,” says DiDonna. “That’s the difference between an exceptional haircut and just a haircut.
