When it comes to supersized operatic music, Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is the all-time champ. Best known for his monolithic Ring cycle of four operas—Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung—he set the standard for epic, grandiose stageworks, which he, quite accurately, called his “music dramas.” On August 2 at 8pm, the German composer will be the focus of “Voices of Distinction: Wagner,” a program of the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice celebrating the rich vocal components of his ambitious art.

Founded with the aim of promoting “the human voice as an instrument of healing, peace, and artistic expression through presenting world class performances,” the genre-straddling Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice was launched in 2009 and is well on its way to becoming one of the East Coast’s top vocal arts events. “Voices of Distinction: Wagner,” and evening of “Wagner’s greatest hits,” features leading, hand-picked singers from the Met, Paris, Covent Garden, Geneva, and Teatro Real opera companies and promises “beautiful people singing sublimely beautiful music in a gorgeous mountain setting.”

Tickets are $25 and $55. For more information, call (845) 586-3588 or visit Phoeniciavoicefest.org.
