“A Show of Hands” in Hudson | through November 8
The current group show at the September gallery in Hudson, “A Show of Hands,” opened in September and has been extended through November 8. The exhibit features the work of 25 artists and focuses on the need for human connection, especially in this time of isolation. Ten percent of the sales of works by participating artists will be donated to community educational group Kite’s Nest.
Saugerties First Friday Returns | November 5
The monthly First Friday town-wide event will once again be held in Saugerties, this time on November 5. With covid precautions in effect, village shops and restaurants will be open late (from 5 to 10pm) for the occasion, which is sponsored by Destination Saugerties, to offer specials to visitors. Participating businesses include Inquiring Minds bookstore, the Dutch Tavern, Lux hair Studio, 11 Jane Street gallery, Little Blueberry, Emerge Gallery, Windmill Wine and Spirits, and Diamond Mills Hotel and Tavern.
This is Not a Gag at Mass MoCA | opens November 7
Los Angeles-based artist Richard Nielsen’s new work This is Not a Gag is a set of 49 paintings of masked artists, writers, and friends arranged in a Zoom-style grid to make a powerful statement about human resilience. The work will be on view at Mass MoCA’s Robert W. Wilson building beginning on November 7. Advance-purchase, timed-entry tickets are required.
“A Season in Hell” at Green Kill Gallery | November 7-28
“A Season in Hell,” the November art exhibition at Green Kill gallery in Kingston, was curated by artist Gary Mayer and features his work as well as work by Deirdre Day, David Fox, and Stephen Lewis. The show will be on display November 7 to 28, and includes a special exhibition created titled The Inferno, which was created by Meyer exclusively for the gallery’s bathroom space.
Revel 32 Hosts Pop-Up Restaurant in Poughkeepsie | November 7-14
Poughkeepsie event space Revel 32 will host Simply Gourmet events’ Alma pop-up restaurant from November 7-14 on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 10pm and Saturdays from 4-10pm. The menu will feature classic and modern tapas, along with craft cocktails, wine, and beer.
Staatsburg Estate Offers Guided Walk | November 7
On November 7 from 2 to 4pm visitors can enjoy a free guided stroll across the historic grounds of Staatsburg, the Gilded Age estate of Ruth and Ogden Mills, uncovering hidden landscape secrets along the way. In 1895, Staatsburg’s landscape architect designed the glorious setting, which showcases the good life in the Gilded Age, while using landscape elements to hide the technology and labor that made the estate run. Using historic photos of the grounds, the tour will show what would have been seen over 100 years ago while revealing what was hidden from view. Space is limited, so preregistration is required.
The Bardavon Presents Sugar Skull | through November 13
In honor of Mexico’s annual Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie is hosting free virtual family-friendly performances by Sugar Skull through November 13. In the show, charismatic candy skeleton Sugar Skull follows the music towards the ultimate party while being spurred on by the tricky Chaneques, who desperately want him to be the centerpiece on their ofrenda. Along the path, Sugar Skull meets many colorful characters who teach him how Day of the Dead is much more than a party—it’s a celebration of life. Registration is required (donation suggested).
