โ€œI needed to be around women of a certain ageโ€”primarily Gen X; between 30 and 60โ€”and I knew they needed to sing, too,โ€ Goddess Party founder and matriarch Shana Falana told me about her motivation for creating the group when I interviewed her for Chronogram earlier this year. โ€œBecause when you all sing together magic happens that heals you.โ€ We could all use a little healing magic, especially these days, and the Goddess Party will be bringing a ton of it to Basilica Hudson on November 1 when then all-female choir and musical/performance collective premieres its newest production, โ€œThe Parting of the Veils.โ€

Established by local touring and recording musician Falana in 2023, the 40-member Goddess Party choir is backed by a six-piece rock band that includes Cristina Martinez (Boss Hog) on drums, Betsy Wright (ExHex) on guitar, and Sarah Power on keyboards.

The enormous ensemble performs ethereal and high-energy songs that range from original compositions to Bulgarian field songs to punk anthems by Le Tigre, PJ Harvey, and others, accompanying the music with thematic visuals, choreographed movements, immersive lighting, projected imagery, and bespoke costumes and props. The troupeโ€™s previous shows at area venues like Opus 40 and the Old Dutch Church have been much talked-about season highlights.

The Goddess Party will present โ€œThe Parting of the Veilsโ€ at Basilica Hudson in Hudson on November 1 at 6:30pm. The performance will be preceded at 7:30pm by a sound bath from Cowgirls Meditate. Tickets are $25. The event is open to all ages.

Peter Aaron is the arts editor for Chronogram.
