To experience the paintings of Jenny Kemp is to dive deep into a biomorphic universe, a profoundly internal space that pulsates with a quiet strength.
Originally from the Midwest, the Troy based artist references the aesthetics of Op Art and Minimalism with the use of tightly detailed line work. These precise and trance-inducing parallel lines have barely discernible ‘imperfections,’ reminding us that the creator is human rather than robotic.
“My use of wavy, handmade lines references organic matter and forms and the idea that we are organic beings” says Kemp.
Ripe with anatomical references, Kemp creates spaces that appear to be illuminated from within, achieved using gradating hues that vary in intensity. Paintings like Bi-Focus demonstrate how Kemp’s visual language represents phenomena that can be felt, yet rarely seen.
From now through September 15th, a selection of new paintings by Jenny Kemp can be seen in the exhibit, “PULSE: Color & Form in a Visual Rhythm” currently on view at Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson along with the work of Jeanette Fintz, Ginny Fox, and wall sculptor, Dai Ban.
Jenny Kemp earned an MFA in painting from the University of Albany. Her work has been exhibited nationally, most recently at the Schick Gallery at Skidmore College and the Art on Paper Fair in New York City. Kemp was featured in the book 100 Painters of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson. She received the 2015 NYFA Artist Fellowship in Painting and the 2015 Emerging Artist Award from the art Center of the Capital Region in Troy. She currently sits on the board of Collar Works, a non-profit, artist run exhibit space in Troy.
