Doyle is not reinventing the wheel. Instead, he offers a yeoman’s capitulation of Americana. Perhaps the best illustration of this are the faux-soul flashes on “Lord, Send Me Someone to Love,” as faux-soul a title as could imagined. Throughout the nine-song disc, Doyle sings above the level of the material, but occasionally, when he catches the right atmosphere, as on “If I Give You My Heart,” Nowhere really shines. Would that it all hit that glorious level. Backing, from drummer/producer Manuel Quintana, bassist Luke McCrosson, and keyboardists Scott Milici and Jeremy Baum, is always solid, but rarely righteous. It’s as though the entire crew has listened to too many well-produced major label albums and are striving for that sound. That effort makes this disc pleasant rather than potent. The real rockers in the room will take potent every time.
