Featuring seven live bands, the August 23 event will help offset expenses for Frenchy and the Punk's Samantha Stephenson, who is undergoing treatments for breast cancer.
One of the Hudson Valley’s most tireless musical ensembles is Frenchy and the Punk, the postpunk duo of Samantha “Frenchy” Stephenson and Scott “the Punk” Helland. Inspiring indie artists who truly make their own way, they’ve spent most of their 21 years as a band on the road, doing exactly what they love — playing music and making a living from it. So seeing them sidelined while Stephenson undergoes costly treatments for stage two breast cancer has brought an added layer of unease to an already wrenching situation. Thankfully, the beloved pair has a lot of supportive local friends, including local promotions group DCxPC Live, which has stepped up to organize “F&@#$ Cancer,” a benefit show for the singer at Snapper Magee’s on August 23.
The punk-packed event will feature performances by seven fiery East Coast acts: the Dick Pinchers, Guitarmy of One (Helland’s solo project), Bad Mary, Art of War, TurboGoth, and Low Flying Planes. For those who can’t attend but would still like to help out, Frenchy and the Punk, no strangers to Chronogram‘s pages, have also launched a Gofundme campaign.
Formed in New York City in 2005, by the French-born Stephenson and Western Mass hardcore veteran Helland (Deep Wound, Outpatients), Frenchy and the Punk have released 12 studio albums of edgy, ethereal goth-y songs, which are marked by effects-heavy semi-acoustic guitar and driving tribal percussion. Their newest single is this year’s timely “War on War.”
DCxPC Live will present “F&@#$ Cancer” to help offset Samantha Stephenson’s treatment and other expenses at Snapper Magee’s on August 23 at 4pm. Tickets are available online and at the door for a minimum donation of $5, with higher donations very much encouraged.
