Syracuse-area band the Vanderbuilts have been going since 2010, playing their alternately wistful and edgy indie folk rock at SXSW and sharing stages with Leon Russell, Titus Andronicus, Cults, Eytan and the Embassy, Red Wanting Blue, and other notable names. Earlier this month the group, which is led by Rhinebeck native Sam Kogan, released โ€œI Wish I Was a Saber Toothed Tiger,โ€ a single (with accompanying video) from the groupโ€™s upcoming album.

Hereโ€™s a video of the band performing the tune at the Bitter End in New York:

Still unnamed, the new album is set for release in early 2013. Kogan explains the record is โ€œinfluenced by [filmmaker] Werner Herzogโ€™s 2010 masterpiece, Cave of Forgotten Dreamsโ€ and โ€œtoys with ancient themes/sounds/images.โ€ The disc is the Vanderbuiltsโ€™ third self-released offering, after 2011โ€™s Far From Here and 2012โ€™s Miguelโ€™s Orchard.
