The Sun enters the sign of Sagittarius on November 21, but all of the inner planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) pass through the sign at some point this month. This means we’re likely to feel its energy in a multitude of ways. Sagittarius is one of the more difficult signs to wrap our heads around because its significations can seem contradictory. How can one sign be host to both wisdom and buffoonery? Ethics and licentiousness? Enthusiasm and indolence? Well, true to its exploratory nature, Sagittarius is blind to limits and categorizations. Its most comfortable place is the gamut.
Ruled by the giant and jovial planet Jupiter, Sagittarius thrives on the freedom to expand its mind, heart, and experience. It’s the place in the natal chart or in your life that feels like a magnifying glass or Miracle-Gro. It’s the place where ideas and opportunities never stop coming, and luck is always on tap. It’s enough to make you feel optimistic for life! What could possibly go wrong? Ever hear of “too much of a good thing,” or “running roughshod over details,” or, how about plain old profligacy, inflation, and over-optimism?
The quality of being unsubstantiated isn’t all bad though, which leads us to the virtues of bypassing facts and details. Sagittarius can take us into the realms of the imagination, spirit, and faith; the very things that imbue life with its sense of possibility. Sometimes you have to make things up and use dreams or storytelling to create material conditions. Sometimes we have to push past what’s known to discover something new. These qualities speak to the Sagittarian archetypes of the adventurer, the explorer, the missionary, the teller of tales, and the religious firebrand. Sagittarius also has correlations to the quest for knowledge and ideological order. Jupiter, in Roman mythology, is also known as Zeus in Greek mythology—King of the Gods. Therefore Sagittarius can also speak to judicial figures, laws, and the entitlement to bestow and enforce these judgements. In this vein of Sagittarius we find the archetypes of the pedagog, the philosopher, and the guru.
Sagittarius is symbolized by a centaur who holds a bow and arrow. A centaur is a figure that has the lower body of a horse and the upper body of a human. Astrologically, the creature’s lower body represents primal instincts and animal desires. The upper body symbolizes the intellect and aspirations for higher knowledge. That this creature is also an archer is emblematic of having far-reaching goals and the willingness to traverse great distances to reach them. In Greek mythology, centaurs were known for indulging in the excessive pleasures of sensuality and merriment: gorging oneself on rich food, drinking, sex, and sometimes, violence. This is also an aspect of Sagittarian nature—a need to push the limits of their freedom and to experience the full range of their wildness. In contemporary times, this might look like the party animal, the comedian, or the “rolling stone that gathers no moss.”
Along with Aries and Leo, Sagittarius is a part of the Fire trigon. If Aries is the spark of ignition and Leo is the steady glow of a cultivated campfire, Sagittarius is a wildfire that can’t be contained. All fire signs are hungry and need to burn things to stay alive, but the Sagittarian appetite is the most voracious, especially when it comes to knowledge and experience. As soon as a hunger is fed, it not only wants more but usually wants something different—more exotic, alien, or foreign. This is why Sagittarius is usually pegged as the great traveler of the zodiac, but we must remember that not all journeys are physical. For Sagittarius, some of the greatest quests occur in the mind and spirit.
Along with Gemini, Virgo, and Pisces, Sagittarius is part of the mutable signs. These are the signs that come at the end of a season that help transition us into the next season. Mutable signs are known for their adaptability and keep us from stagnating. A mutable fire sign speaks to an agility of energy (possibly a volatility) that helps us stay inspired in a variety of situations.
This month, expect to feel fierce in your judgment, or possibly overwhelmed with loud stories and the judgements of others. Sagittarius may also show up as restlessness, wanderlust, or a passionate conviction that takes you by surprise. You have permission from the cosmos to explore, just remember that there will be a price to pay for excess and recklessness.
