As the Hudson Valley transforms into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, autumn beckons adventurers to step beyond a traditional leaf-peeping hike. This season, embrace the beauty of fall in unconventional ways and from new vantage points—whether you’re gliding along the river, wandering through the woods, or soaring high above. From tranquil kayak excursions that offer a new perspective on the changing landscape to overnight bike tours that immerse you in nature’s artistry, there’s a world of experiences waiting to be discovered.

With the golden days of autumn under foot, we rounded up seven of the best unconventional ways to get outside and enjoy the foliage.

From the Water

Boat Tour

Enjoy breathtaking views of historic Hudson River lighthouses, waterfront mansions, and other notable sites aboard the Rip Van Winkle. This 90-minute sightseeing cruise, which departs from the Kingston waterfront, showcases the region’s most fascinating locations along the Hudson River, set against a fiery backdrop of foliage.

Another excellent option is led by the New York Boat Company, departing from Peekskill. Their vessel, The Evening Star, a former US Coast Guard Buoy Tender, was converted to a 36-passenger tour boat and relocated to the Hudson Valley in 2010. The fall foliage tour, a 90-minute cruise past the Bear Mountain Bridge, and the 45-minute leaf-peeping tour from Fleischmann’s Pier, provide a relaxing journey through beautiful autumn vistas, perfect for leaf-peeping enthusiasts.

Kayaking

The Hudson Valley is home to over 7,500 freshwater lakes, ponds, and reservoirs waiting to be paddled.

Kayaking through Hudson Valley’s rivers and lakes is an exceptional way to experience the vibrant fall foliage up close. Paddlers can explore popular locations like the Croton River, Esopus Creek, Lake Taghkanic, and Harriman State Park that provide tranquil settings for leaf-peeping, where the reflection of brilliant reds and golds dance across the water’s surface. Guided tours and rental services make this experience accessible for both beginners just dipping their paddle in, and seasoned paddlers to connect with nature while soaking in the scenery.

From the Woods

Rail Explorers

Rail Explorers, an adventure company specializing in guided rail bike tours, provides a fun experience for leaf-peepers to savor panoramas of the Catskills in vibrant autumn hues while getting in a light workout. The company developed the “REX Propulsion System”—a custom-built electric assist motor that makes the ride accessible, even when climbing the steepest of inclines. They offer 90-minute and 150-minute tours that highlight stunning vistas, local wildlife, and the changing season.

Catskill Mountain Railroad

Hop aboard the Catskill Mountain Railroad’s Fall Foliage Adventure Train or Pumpkin Express for a memorable leaf-peeping journey along the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad corridor. As the train winds through the landscape, passengers are treated to views of foliage transforming the mountains and valleys. Trains depart from Westbrook Station at Kingston Plaza and travel through the Hurley Flats. The fall rides last about 75 minutes and cover an eight-mile round trip, allowing you to savor the nostalgic charm of vintage rail travel amidst striking scenery.

Biking

Imagine pedaling along winding trails, the crisp air invigorating as you navigate paths lined with trees ablaze in coppers and golds. As the sun sets, the landscape transforms into a vivid canvas, making each turn an exciting adventure. Overnight bike tours with companies like Gotham Bicycle Tours, Backroads Hudson Valley, the DuVine Cycling and Adventure Company, and Great Freedom Adventures provide a refreshing alternative to traditional leaf-peeping. Embrace the season’s beauty and freedom on two wheels, creating lasting memories amidst nature’s spectacular display.

For a shorter, less challenging excursion ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike, the region’s network of rail trails provide a leisurely way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the season and breathe in the invigorating fall air.

From the Sky

Zipline

Experience the thrill of ziplining while soaking in the stunning fall foliage of the Hudson Valley. Catamount Mountain Resort in Hillsdale offers the Catamount Zip Tour, a two-hour adventure with views of the Berkshire Mountains. The tour culminates in the Catamonster, America’s longest zipline, spanning over a mile. For a different challenge, the aerial adventure park features nine courses of varying difficulty. Other great zipline destinations include Frost Valley YMCA and WildPlay Thacher, each offering riveting perspectives while soaring through the sky of the autumn landscape.

Hang Gliding and Skydiving

Adrenaline junkies can opt to experience the foliage from new heights with hang gliding and skydiving. Thrill-seekers can soar above the trees at three prime locations in Ellenville: Mountain Wings, Ellenville Flight Park, and Ellenville Flight Park Northwest Launch. Or, head to The Ranch in Gardiner for the highest tandem skydive in New York. Freefalling from thousands of feet will certainly offer a rare perspective on the autumn scenery. Views of colorful treetops and rolling hills await.
