I went to visit Amma Sri Karunamayi during her Woodstock stop on her North American tour in 2011. The first time I went for a blessing in 2009, I went on a whim. I have been to India four times, and I had heard about her in my yoga circles, and seen flyers here and there. Amma usually visits Woodstock during the summer, and it was a beautiful day to sit near the Bearsville Theater and meditate in Amma's presence. I dressed up in my white clothes, and settled on the prayer request I would write on the index card, which is given to Amma during the individual blessing.

Amma draws huge crowds, so be prepared to wait a few hours if you don't get there early. You will be given an index card with a letter on it. That is your group. I was in Group K, and her ushers were starting to guide Group C when I got there. When I got to Bearsville Theater Amma was giving a lecture on how the alignments of the planets can wreak havoc on human kind. I didn't stay for the complete explanation, but she talked at length about Jupiter. Amma kept on saying that things could be "very gloriful" when Jupiter is in the right alignment. I love that word: gloriful! This was my third time receiving a blessing from Amma so I know the drill. I got my index card, stayed a few minutes, and left with the intention to return when the crowds thinned out.

Around 5:30pm, I returned and only had to wait about 15 minutes for my turn. I left with a handful of Hershey's Kisses, Amma cards, and an "Amma" glow. On Monday, July 8, Amma will have individual blessings from 11-5pm. On July 9, she will offer a one-day meditation retreat from 8am-6pm at the Bearsville Theater.
