Explore the influence of the great German Naturalist Alexander von Humboldt on Frederic Church. Humboldt’s writings inspired Church’s South American adventures resulting in his internationally successful masterpiece “The Heart of the Andes” and informing his later trips to Germany’s Bavarian Lakes and Mexico.
The exhibition highlights sketches and artifacts and Church’s diary, on view for the first time, from these trips that trace Church’s daring escapades to capture Humboldt’s “Cosmos.”
