Composer, instrumentalist, and long-time Hudson Valley resident Pauline Oliveros is a true giant of modern music, one long overdue to become the subject of a documentary. Finally, though, someone is working to correct that situation—Accord filmmaker Daniel Weintraub, who’s been working with Oilveros for over a year on Deep Listening: The Story of Pauline Oliveros. And now he needs your help: Weintraub recently launched an online campaign to raise funds necessary to complete the project.
With a career that spans nearly 60 years, Oliveros helped create contemporary electronic music and multimedia performance, and pioneered the concept of Deep Listening. In addition to being a boundry-transcending composer, musician (primarily an accordionist), and collaborator (with John Cage, Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, and many others), she has been a globe-travelling educator via her work with her own Deep Listening Institute and technological innovator via her Expanded Instrument System and Adaptive Use Musical Instrument software. Interviewing her for the April 2009 issue of Chronogram is one of the high points of my nine years here as Music Editor.
