Attention, groovers! This Saturday, it’s time once again to bust out the frug, the swim, and the funky chicken when New York’s suavest DJ, the one and only Mr. Jonathan Toubin, brings his Soul Clap party and dance contest back to BSP Lounge in Kingston.
As anyone who was at last September’s Soul Clap at BSP—or any of those who’ve attended his 900-and-up-drawing Brooklyn parties—will tell you with gusto, Toubin spins the grittiest, greasiest, and greatest Northern soul dance-floor fillers ever committed to 45 RPM, and will have you rolling your rump and shakin’ your bacon with uninhibited abandon. For me, being a judge for the dance-contest portion of the event last time was a highlight of 2012.
And just like last time, Jack’s Rhythms of New Paltz is donating a cash prize of $100 for the contest’s winning dancer. Judges this year include Grasshopper of Mercury Rev, local scene queen and drummer Raissa St. Pierre, Chronogram managing editor Brian Mahoney, and others. The into-the-wee hours, sure-to-be-sweat-soaked soiree kicks off with a live set by New York garage punkers Stalkers, who are fronted by Hudson Valley native Andy Animal. Here’s a l’il tease:
The party takes place this Friday, February 9, at BSP Lounge in Kingston. Doors are at 9pm. Tickets are $6 and $8.
