Martin and Eliza Carthy embody the long lineage and deep tradition of English folk: Singer and guitarist Martin has been an important figure since the early days of the British folk revival; singer and multi-instrumentalist Eliza is the daughter of Martin and legendary vocalist Norma Waterson. Thus, area folk fans should be delighted when the father-daughter duo appears at the Rosendale Cafe on April 17.
Martin Carthy was a strong influence the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon—in fact, the legend goes, Simon caused a long-standing rift between himself and Carthy when he completely lifted the latter’s arrangement of the traditional “Scarborough Fair” for the hit Simon and Garfunkel version. Fittingly, Eliza was actually born in the town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Since first learning her style while playing with her parents in the duo Waterson:Carthy, she’s performed with Billy Bragg and in the folk supergroup Blue Murder.
