Pelican Movement to Play in Rosendale

Locally based musical ensemble Pelican Movement will perform in the visually enchanting, acoustically amazing setting of Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale on September 16.

Pelican Movement is headed by local musician, producer, and audio engineer Kevin McMahon (Swans, Real Estate, Titus Andronicus), who devised the concept for the project—dense, layered, multi-movement music rooted in 1970s prog rock and combined with modern, post-production, sound-collage treatments—some 25 years ago. A shapeshifting collective, McMahon’s outfit just released A Fistful of Ivy, its long-awaited debut, on the reputably discerning Feeding Tube Records label, and the Rosendale concert has been set up to promote the unveiling.


The album was recorded, mixed, and produced at McMahon’s Marcata Recording studio in New Paltz and began as an instrumental suite dealing with the history of his mother’s experience with Alzheimer’s. Various players came together in dribs and drabs—Kris Kuss (Pile), Gideon Bok, Chris Robertson, and Saram Al Rawi (Liquor Store) coalesced as a live version of the band and recorded the album’s basic tracks in 2019. Later, Izzy Hagerup and Michael Di Santo independently wrote lyrics and recorded vocals without ever meeting. Other players later added their own unique contributions as well.

Pelican Movement will perform with special guests Curtis Harvey (Rex) and Belle Skinner at Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale on September 16 at 6:30pm. See website for ticket info.
