During his 2012 residency at EMPAC, Canadian ambient/electronic musician Tim Hecker recorded parts of his acclaimed album Virgins (Kranky/Paper Bag Records). On November 13, Hecker will return to the knife-edge Troy arts venue to unveil a new performance that mixes sound and light in the center’s Studio 1.

Hecker’s live performances make good use of larger rooms, alternately dealing in huge fluxuations in volume and dense noise (the bag he was in when I last saw him) and icy plains of crystalline quietude. Over the course of his lengthy career he has incorporated into his music elements of classical, techno, metal, and musique concrete.

Here’s a beautiful video for the Virgins track “Black Refraction”:

Tim Hecker will perform at EMPAC in Troy, New York, on November 13 at 9pm. Tickets are $18. For more information, call (518) 276-3291 or visit http://empac.rpi.edu/.
