With her hits “Luka,” “Tom’s Diner,” and “Blood Makes Noise,” New York contemporary folk singer Suzanne Vega was a formidable force in the 1980s pop charts. In support of her latest album, the live An Evening of New York Songs and Stories, the singer-songwriter will pay a visit to the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center on April 22.

Vega is also touring on the heels of “Lover, Beloved,” her one-woman stage show about the life of writer Carson McCullers. The show premiered last year at SXSW to critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, the Austin Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, The Forward, and other publications.

Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1959, Vega moved with her family to New York when she was two. She studied English literature at Barnard College and began performing her songs at a Monday night songwriters’ group hosted by the late folksinger Jack Hardy. She signed with A&M Records for her 1985 self-titled debut album after some of her early songs had helped gain her attention through their appearance on volumes of the Fast Folk compilation series. Top-selling albums, such as Solitude Standing (1987), 99.F° (1992), and Beauty & Crime (2007), followed.

Suzanne Vega will perform at Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center in Sugar Loaf, New York, on April 22 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.70.
